Low-VOC vs. High-VOC Solvent-Based Traffic Paint

• Low-VOC solvent-based paint: A reformulated alkyd product that maintains the strong adhesion and performance characteristics of solvent-based paint while reducing airborne VOC emissions during application. Often specified for projects with environmental requirements, proximity to occupied buildings, or sites where air quality considerations are a factor.
• Standard (higher-VOC) solvent-based paint: The traditional alkyd formulation used extensively on roads and industrial pavement for decades. Suitable for open-air road marking, industrial sites, and applications where VOC content is not a project constraint.

Considerations

• VOC emissions: Compared to waterborne paint, standard solvent-based paint produces more VOC emissions during application. Adequate ventilation and appropriate site conditions should be confirmed before application.
• Dry time: Solvent evaporation can require a longer traffic hold-off period than waterborne products in certain conditions.
• Long-term durability: For the highest-wear applications — major highways, heavy-traffic intersections, or safety-critical markings requiring multi-year service life — MMA cold plastic markings may be the more cost-effective long-term solution, despite a higher upfront cost.

• Water-borne traffic paint: Low-VOC, fast-drying, cost-effective. Best for parking lots, bike lanes, warehouse floors, and standard commercial line painting programs.
• Solvent-based (alkyd) traffic paint: Strong adhesion, cooler-temperature application, proven road marking performance. Best for roads, crosswalks, industrial pavement, bike lanes, and challenging surface conditions.
• MMA cold plastic markings: Premium, long-life system. Best for highways, major intersections, airports, and safety-critical markings requiring 5+ years of durability.

Where solvent-based paint earns its place

Solvent-based (alkyd) traffic paint dries by evaporation rather than water release, which makes it noticeably more forgiving when temperatures drop or humidity climbs. For work in the cooler shoulder months — early spring layout changes, late-autumn repairs before winter — it is often the practical way to get durable lines down when waterborne paint would struggle to cure.

It also builds a slightly harder film, which some property managers prefer on surfaces that see heavy truck traffic or aggressive winter plowing.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

The chemistry that makes solvent paint cold-tolerant also gives it higher VOC content and a stronger odour during application, and Canadian VOC regulations limit where and when higher-VOC coatings can be used. In practice that means we recommend it selectively: when the calendar, the surface or the traffic profile genuinely calls for it — not as a default. For occupied sites in the normal season, water-based paint remains the cleaner choice; for maximum service life on the hardest-worked surfaces, MMA cold plastic outlasts both.
