Where solvent-based paint earns its place

Solvent-based (alkyd) traffic paint dries by evaporation rather than water release, which makes it noticeably more forgiving when temperatures drop or humidity climbs. For work in the cooler shoulder months — early spring layout changes, late-autumn repairs before winter — it is often the practical way to get durable lines down when waterborne paint would struggle to cure.

It also builds a slightly harder film, which some property managers prefer on surfaces that see heavy truck traffic or aggressive winter plowing.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

The chemistry that makes solvent paint cold-tolerant also gives it higher VOC content and a stronger odour during application, and Canadian VOC regulations limit where and when higher-VOC coatings can be used. In practice that means we recommend it selectively: when the calendar, the surface or the traffic profile genuinely calls for it — not as a default. For occupied sites in the normal season, water-based paint remains the cleaner choice; for maximum service life on the hardest-worked surfaces, MMA cold plastic outlasts both.
